Samichlaus

In switzerland (and I think most parts of europe) we don't have santa claus like in the states. Here he's called "Samichlaus" (=Nikolaus in Germany) and he comes on december 6th. He doesn't bring the gifts (that's the job of the "Christkind" on christmas eve) but chocolate, cookies, peanuts and mandarins. The tradition is that he comes with his helper "Schmutzli" (=Knecht Ruprecht in Germany). He reads out of his big old book if the children were good this year or not. If not he says he will put them in Schmutzli's big sack and take them with him to the dark forest. But if they were good they get a little bag with the goodies in it.
When I was little I was extremely scared of the "Samichlaus". He would come visit us at the kindergarten and eventhough I don't think I was a very good and polite kid (I was kind of a brat) it never said so in his big book ;)
Oh yea and he's also not fat like Santa haha but really skinny.

I tracked down english recipes for the three most famous swiss christmas cookies. My favorites are the Mailänderlis. Everyone I know loves them too so I would definitely try these out if you have time.

Mailänderli

Brunsli

Zimtsterne

What are some christmas traditions where you live? And what's your favorite christmas food?

wow this was interesting i thought christmas was the same all over :) well im from the uk and we just go to bed on the 24th leaving out a snack (generally a sweet mince pie) & a drink for santa & a carrot for rudolf haha.. my parents take a bite out of them for effect and i wake up to a mountain of presents on the 25th then we visit all of the family and my grandma makes an amazing lunch of vegetables (as we're all vegetarian) and a selection of great deserts, my favourite is a good old trifle as long as its not ruined with some form of alcohol :) x

So in italy we have S. Lucia..
she's like Santa Claus, but she's a woman without eyes that bring gifts to all children..
she comes in the night 12th December and the 13th December all family eats together. Its pretty cool because the air is light and for a day you have no problem.. love it..<3

Haha, does S. Lucia sound absolutely terrifying to anybody else??

I love fruitcake. It's not popular here because it sort of looks like a mound of wet dog food with jelly inside, but... it's seriously delicious. Ginger and molasses and nuts and fruits in bread? Hello!

it's just a method to keep children in the bed during the night.. because if you see S. Lucia, she gives you just carbon because you were not in bed..xD So all children stay in bed because they want the gifts, and the parents can place the presents and the sweets without worry..but s.lucia is so sweet cause she bring gift for the children and carbon for the parents XD

In Germany on December the 6th Nikolaus comes and put some sweets like chocolate, clementines, peanuts and also small gifts in the kids' shoes. The kids have to clean and polish them and put them next to the door. And on December the 24th the Weihnachtsmann comes to everx house and brings presents to the children. In some areas it is the Christkind and in some Weihnachtsmann. And they also know if the kids have been naughty or nice during the year.
At the moment I'm in NYC and I told the kids of a friend about our tradition of Nikolaus. They put their boots next to the door last night and were totally thrilled as they found some german chocolate in there ;-)

In Poland we have Santa coming on the 6th like in Germany, and on Chistmas eve a little baby Christ comes with the presents (at least in the south of Poland where I am from). My favorite food it the gingerbread cookies that are made from a recipe from my greatgrandmother :)

Véronique Eve, no eyes? She's does sound scary haha. But here "Schmutzli" is supposed to be scary too. I guess they want to scare the children so they're nice :P

the cat whisperer, I never ha fruitcake. I just googled it and it does look kinda weird haha. But it sounds yummy.

madeleine, das mit den Schuhen wusste ich gar nicht. Da würde ich extra die grössten Schuhe nehmen die ich finden kann ;)
